PatternCooler.com is a seamless pattern resource built in PHP, MYSQL, Javascript and SVG. It is the home to nearly 200,000 pattern themes that have be created by users and rendered dynamically on the server using Batik and ImageMagick from SVG files. Having made patterns for many years with a variety of digital tools, I felt there were few powerful tools available to the designer that made seamless tile creation a straight forward task. Feeling that offering even a large collection of pattern designs in a fixed range of colors and sizes would not really provide designers with the resource I was personally dreaming of, I set about building this site.

With this editor I've attempted to create a very direct and easy way to browse through the database of pattern color variations and edit selected designs all in one place. The editor allows users to save palettes and apply them to all designs quickly and easily. This ability combined with a shuffle tool, a RGB true color selector and repeat size controls allows designers to create whole collections of coordinated pattern themes in a fun way and save to their account for use at another time.

Having worked with patterns for a number of years I've often been frustrated at the lack of a powerful vector based pattern tile grouping tool in the applications i use. My pattern 'spreader' App enable users to apply graduations to areas of repeating pattern. Applying graduations to tiled areas in common vector software means joining or welding the pattern elements into one big object, which can be a clumsy and time consuming solution - especially if hairline joins are created in the process. If one wants to then change size and repeat parameters in conventional software then this is also a problem. The app enables users to download artwork as png, jpg, svg, or pdf.

Now having built my own solution to solve this basic problem i can see the potential for a whole new gamut of vector pattern tools and resulting pattern based design and art. I built this simple viewing and rating gallery to show off some of the fascinating artworks that have been created using this new tool. Its very easy to get some visually impressive results. The picture in the gallery was created by my 11 year old daughter.

Rebuilding this, my first ever site, maybe 20 times was the way I learned to construct websites. There are still parts of this site I could be very ashamed off if I were a coding purist, but for all its crude quirks and methods, I'm still very fond of it. Writing content to make an art site visible in the searches is a real challenge. But here again through many experiments I have gained much SEO knowledge and this site still gets 20k visits per month from natural search even though I haven't updated it for a couple of years.
